There are 2 types of lighting ceremony held in Chiang Mai, Thailand: Yi Peng and Loy Krathong.
For those who visit Thailand, these two events are combined into one event, but according to locals, the two events are very different.
During the Loy Krathong festival, Thai people make banana leaves like Kantok, and put flowers, Candles and incense are added and floated into the river.
It is said that some people put coins in the float to offer to the guardian spirits of the river. During the festival, Thai people often play with fireworks and pray for their parents.
Loy Krathong is celebrated all over Thailand, but Yi Peng is celebrated only in Chiang Mai. Yi Peng Festival is a balloon release festival.
In this festival, traditional Thai balloons are filled with fuel and released into the sky. They believed their misfortunes and the bad things that they have done flew away with the balloon they released.
The festival will be held from Nov 15 - 17 from Wat Saen Fang Intersection to Thapae Gate Square with the beauty of traditional Thai dance.
